While there are various types of kimono,
ranging from formal to casual,
ALLOWA carefully selects
beautiful patterns from kimono known as
kurotomesode, irotomesode, and komon
to create
one-of-a-kind shirts
unlike any other in the world.
KUROTOMESODE
The kurotomesode is the most formal type of kimono, traditionally worn by married women on ceremonial occasions such as weddings and receptions. Characterized by a solid black background, it features decorative motifs—often located around the hem—known as eba-gara. These motifs commonly include auspicious designs such as cranes and turtles, pine-bamboo-plum trios, folding fans, chrysanthemums, treasure motifs, and flowing water, each imbued with symbolic meaning. Kurotomesode are typically made of chirimen (crepe silk) and are often embellished with gold accents, gold leaf, and intricate embroidery.
IROTOMESODE
The irotomesode is a formal type of kimono that features a base color other than black and can be worn by individuals regardless of marital status. While the kurotomesode is considered the most formal attire for married women, the irotomesode evolved to accommodate a wider range of wearers. It is commonly worn at prestigious occasions such as weddings, formal receptions, and honors ceremonies. The defining feature of the irotomesode is its vibrant base color combined with decorative eba-gara patterns positioned only around the hem.
KOMON
Komon is a type of kimono commonly worn as a casual yet stylish garment. It is characterized by repeating patterns that cover the entire surface of the fabric, with designs ranging in size and style. The defining feature of komon is the uniform repetition of motifs across the kimono. These garments are primarily produced using stencil-dyeing techniques, such as katazome (dyeing with paper stencils), and they come in various designs including all-over patterns (sōgara) and scattered motifs (tobigara). Notable regional styles include Edo Komon, Kyo Komon, and Kaga Komon.
